Welcome to the Burnt Earth shop! Every instrument here is completely
unique...all are hand formed from ceramic stoneware clay, not thrown on
a potter's wheel. No two instruments are alike in size, color, finish, texture
or sound. I am not into high volume production; every instrument is uniquely
hand crafted with care. Actually, most of these instruments I made for myself,
but I have too many now and I just can't stop making them!
Due to the nature of stoneware clay, which is really nothing more than
mud that has been formed and baked in a gas oven at over 2,000 degrees fahrenheit,
these instruments do not look "perfect" like mass-produced, molded
pottery that you may see in stores. The nature of the gas reduction firing
process torches the clay and pulls it in all directions, which means that
nothing comes out of the kiln perfectly round, or with a perfectly consistent
finish. I like to exploit that unknown factor, and you will see many designs
and finishes that take advantage of the organic effects of the firing and
glazing process. Many of these instruments are primitive in appearance,
but they are carefully crafted to be top quality professional musical instruments.
Top grade goat skins and fish skins are used for drum heads, and they're
attached using methods I've developed that I believe are equal or superior
to the best instruments on the market. However, I don't think you will find
some of these instruments anywhere else...
What Burnt Earth customers are saying:
"The didjibodhran arrived today and I've taken this short break
from using it to let you know! I love it... it's amazing... it makes me
happy... it has such a rich and focused sound! Thank you again for such
"Over the past several months I've purchased four of Barry's ceramic
instruments. After I bought the first two, I just couldn't stop myself.
They are so unique and fun to play that the urge to start a collection could
not be surpressed."
This drum appeals to me far more than anything that I've been able to
get my hands on, and let me say that I trekked all around LA trying doumbeks.
