TRIPLE SPIRAL

Ancient and Imagined Celtic Music

Triple Spiral band photo

Triple Spiral performs Celtic-influenced music from Brittany, France, England, and the Scottish Isles and Highlands. The band's repertoire blends traditional and original songs, weaving together dance tunes and atmospheric pieces shaped for both listening and dancing.

An array of unusual instruments — including bagpipes, bouzouki, bodhran, and hurdy-gurdy — underpins lush five-part vocal harmonies sung in Breton, Scottish Gaelic, French, and English. Triple Spiral's debut recording Unearthed captures this sound world with lively sets and haunting songs that evoke ancient roots and new imaginings of Celtic music.

Triple Spiral is:

Ray Price – voice, bagpipes, dulcimer, bass, percussion

Beth Hall – voice, viola, flute, whistle, bass, bodhrán

Track notes

1. Tri Martolod (Traditional) 2:58
Sung in Breton (the Celtic language of Brittany), a song about three sailors who travel to a distant shore, where they are smitten by a fair maiden and compete for her affection. The one with the foresight to bring a wedding ring gets the girl. (lead vocal: Ray)

2. Binnie's Waltz (Ray Price) 3:20
This tune is dedicated to Ray and Sally's cat “Biniou” who bears the name of the high-pitched Breton bagpipe that his squeaky meow imitates so well.

3. Chi Mi Na Mòrbheanna (Mist-Covered Mountains) (Iain Òg Ruaidh) 3:26
A Gaelic song of longing for the highlands of Scotland. “I see the big mountains, the mist-covered glens, the land of my birth. Hail to the blue-green grassy knolls, hail to the forests. I would live there contently forever.” (lead vocal: Sally)

4. An Dro (Traditional arr. Barry Hall) 4:13
This traditional circle dance tune from Brittany features the bombard, a rustic Breton oboe. An dro means “one dance” or “to go round.”

5. Arvor-You (music: Traditional Breton, lyrics: Donatien Laurent, Herri Leon, Alan Stivell) 4:55
Our interpretation of a song from Alan Stivell's album Back to Breizh (Back to Brittany) about the beauty of the Celtic nations of Brittany, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and beyond. One motherland, one blood line…the breath of life. (lead vocals: Lindsay and Barry)

6. Christiana (Ray Price) 3:32
A mazurka from Ray's creation The Mill, a Medieval love story set against the crusade and inquisition of the Cathars in the Languedoc region of southern France.

7. May Song (Traditional) 1:20
May Day or Beltane is celebrated by many cultures including the Celts. One tradition is hanging boughs of “May bush” (rowan or hawthorn) on doors and windows.

8. Triple Spiral Waltz (Lindsay Adler) 3:17
The three parts of this waltz honor the unity of the elements of earth, air and water, inspired by the Celtic triskele symbol.

9. Hi Hò Rò (Iain MacGhill'eathain) 4:27
A waulking song in Scots Gaelic, the indigenous tongue of Scotland. “You are my love and I'll never deny it. I hope one day we will be together, and if you are faithful to me I will never love another.” (lead vocal: Sally)

10. L’alouette est sur la Branche (Traditional) 2:02
A French children’s song, “the lark is on the branch.” (lead vocal: Lindsay)

11. Two by Two (Lindsay Adler) 3:51
Lindsay's love of 17th century French dance music inspired this original bourrée that features the hurdy-gurdy.

12. River Driver (Traditional) 2:15
A traditional lumber camp song from southwestern Newfoundland, a haven for Scottish and French immigrants in past centuries. (lead vocal: Ray)

13. Winter Farewell (Traditional / Barry Hall) 4:35
Barry arranged and expanded this traditional laride dance tune from Trebabu, Brittany. The name “Winter Farewell” signifies the transition from winter to spring, from darkness to light.

14. Mintin Breizh (Brittany Morning) (Rachel Tyson / Ray Price) 5:30
A song about the magical spirits of Brittany, with lyrics from a poem by Rachel Tyson. (lead vocal: Ray)
